Dance has been a way of life during Cheryl's entire professional career. She studied at the University of Oregon and has performed and taught all over the country.
It's only fitting, then, that it occupies a special space in what Fitness In Focus offers. Cheryl has immense experience in a variety of disciplines and can be scheduled as a guest artist for any of the following:
Hip Hop
This high energy art form is something Cheryl has excelled at for years. She popularized the program at Lane Community College as her classes swelled well beyond capacity. After over 100 students attended a guest class she taught at the University of Oregon, the school began offering hip hop as a regular course.
Lyrical Jazz
This modern dance form is a specialty of Cheryl's. It infuses modern dance, jazz and ballet and is often referred to as contemporary dance. A lyrical piece will have flowing moves that connect throughout the dance. The dancer must be able to execute precise movements and be able to properly convey oneself through the use of varying facial expressions.
Jazz
Go big or go home with this dance style. Show yourself off. Improvise. Bring energy. Jazz dance has become apart of popular culture and it's not hard to see why. You'll see examples in music videos, commercials and movies. Much of jazz dance is rooted in ballet as it encourages grace and balance. This form of dance showcases individual style and originality.
Modern
As with all things that are steeped in tradition, there is a class of people who want something different. Such was the case with classicaly trained ballet dancers in the early 20th century. Less rigidity and more creativity in both performance and choreography are characteristics of modern dance. Over time, the term "modern" is perhaps less relevant as other forms have become more defined.
Ballet
Consider this dance form a real original. Just about every form of dance owes its foundation to ballet. The techniques are classic and can be found across the board whether it be hip hop, jazz, lyrical or others.
